“Do what makes you happy, be with who makes you smile, laugh as much as you breathe, and love as long as you live.”
Recently I was given the opportunity to help out with a really fun project at a student appreciation event at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. I was working with Kishan from “Central Park Bubbles” based in New York. We were demonstrating how to make these big beautiful bubbles for the Students, and giving them the opportunity to participate in the bubble making too. “It really was a lot of fun!” Many Students said how much they “loved it, and that it was the funnest thing they had done all day!” Another student while creating bubbles, stated “how much they all needed this break from their classes!”
One young lady, said how it made her “feel like a child again,” as she giggled with delight over the huge bubbles she was able to make with “Central Park’s Bubbles.” I thought to myself as I was watching how much the students were enjoying the Bubbles, how really important and wonderful it is to be able to break from your routine, relax and have fun!
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
Do you like the hard-working students I met in Arkansas; feel lost in the daily grind of your work, and need a break as well sometimes? I honestly believe we all very much need these happy times to take a breath, relax and have fun with our families and friends! Doing so reminds us of the pure simple childlike joy of being alive, and making new discoveries. We need adventure and experiences that add a sense of fulfillment to our life!
What makes you “come alive?” How can you spice up your life with some good wholesome fun? Life is a wonderful adventure! We need to be mindfuly present to really enjoy it. If we are always busy with tasks, thinking of the future, or wallowing in our past mistakes, we will miss out on all the beauty, peace and joy available to us in this present moment.
“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it. (21)”
To give us even more great reasons to make fun and happiness a higher priority, I found a number of ways happiness improves your health as well. Kira M. Newman in her article entitled “Six Ways Happiness is Good for your Health” describes the following beneficial attributes for our health when happiness is a regular part of our experience.
- Happiness protects your heart.
- Happiness strengthens your immune system.
- Happiness combats stress.
- Happy people have fewer aches and pains.
- Happiness combats disease and disability.
- Happiness lengthens our lives.
Here is a link to her article as well. I really enjoyed it, and I am sure you will find it very helpful as well. (https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/six_ways_happiness_is_good_for_your_health#thank-influence)
My suggestion is simply this, think of some things you really enjoy doing. Make a list if you like. Then make some plans with family or friends to go do some of these awesome ideas of yours as soon as possible! Life is too short to wait for some future time to be happy! Let’s find ways to be happy now! So often we get so busy, we put things off far to long. Let’s give ourselves permission to be happy, and have fun now!
In addition to making some great plans for some fun time off activities, I would like to suggest we all do a little something fun every day. Take a few minutes, preferably 30 minutes to an hour each day, where you can have some “me” time and do what you enjoy! You may be able to do this at lunch time, or any other time that works for you. The point is, make yourself and things you enjoy a priority! If we are not happy, how are we going to be beneficial to ourselves let alone anyone else?
When you are happier, work and school are less stressful, you will feel much more productive! You will feel better mentally, physically and spiritually. Everything will flow so much more smoothly. You and I are worth taking time for! Create some awesome memories, and if you ever get a chance make some beautiful gigantic bubbles with Central Park Bubbles!
