I once had a terrifying dream, in which I was visited by the incarnation of fear. Hand shadows danced across the ceiling in frightful dread, as a sound welled up from the floor like the waking dead. Frozen with fear I watched as a monstrous being slowly rose up through the floor, making the horrible sound I heard! Silently I prayed for deliverance from this terrifying being. In my dream I was joined by others who prayed with me for deliverance from the fearful menace. Suddenly, in a flash of light the dreadful incarnation vanished, replaced by a shining Angelic watcher. The angel spoke to me saying, “One thing you have yet to overcome. You must overcome fear.” At this point I woke in a cold sweat to consider the dream in depth.
How does one overcome fear? I mean seriously, there are more things to be downright terrified about then you can wrap your mind around. Especially when it comes to the unknown, that can really strike up some cold chills of fear in anyone. I have long considered the dream, and its advice to overcome my fears. I was not until recently that I began to see some clear answers on how this might be done.
Our first clue is mentioned in 1 John 4:18, where it says “18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love..”
What is perfect love? How does it vanquish or drive out fear?
A second clue according to Thich Nhat Hanh, in his eloquently beautiful book “Living Buddha, Living Christ,” “touching nirvana or the ultimate dimension is a total and unconditional surrender to God.” He than gives an example of a wave “knowing” its being is water, it overcomes all fear and sorrow.” The moment we surrender our entire being to God as the ground of our being, all our fears vanish.”
My third clue in the words of Thomas Merton, …”an unconditional and totally humble surrender to God, a total acceptance of ourselves and our situation as willed by him…” I believe he is saying here that this brings us to a place of peace and acceptance of all our circumstances, past, present and future in such a childlike trust in God’s loving care and plan for our life, that fear is vanquished completely! This simple childlike trust in God’s love and care for us will not give fear a place to be in our hearts and minds. Believing that you are deeply and unconditionally loved, and cared for by God, who is well able to “work all things together for your good” will set you free from fear.
Perfect love then is the greatest unconditional love of all, a gift from our Father in heaven. It casts out fear by removing any place for it to dwell within our being. Trust in and surrender to that unconditional love sets you free!
Namaste, and have a wonderful day! I wish you all great love, peace and freedom from the fears that hold you back from living a happier and more successful life.
