Have you ever wondered while walking along a beach what unusual things you may find? Perhaps even a message in a bottle from long ago. While that would be pretty awesome, have you ever stopped to consider that you are “a message in a bottle” to everyone you know? Well we each are a living message to everyone around us. The real question is, what are we saying in this message?
We all spend a great deal of our time each day at work. If your work is anything like mine, you have days at work when one or more co-workers or customers can be very challenging to deal with. I recently had a chance to put some mindfulness skills to the test at work. Thankfully it was helpful for me in dealing with a difficult co-worker. I have found that using the principles of mindfulness, can help handle many situations at work and home with composure and skill.
Isn’t it strange how we now have more communication devices than ever before in history, but we hardly communicate with each other in person any more? Everyone has their eyes glued to a computer screen, their phone or tablet now. I find it so very odd to see everyone on break at work, each one lost in their own shiny screen. We are all alone in a crowd of people. I really enjoy talking to people, and seeing their facial expressions, hearing the inflections of their tone of voice. It is so much better than a text! Don’t get me wrong, I do text and use electronics as much as everyone else does, but I miss the days when people really talked with one another more.
Have you ever had a day when your thoughts just kept you all wound up with worry and anxiety, to where coping with your life becomes quite difficult? I have, and so do many people I know. Well there is something I have learned through mindfulness and meditation that is very helpful for navigating any emotionally stressful situation you may find yourself in. I once had a terrifying dream, in which I was visited by the incarnation of fear. Hand shadows danced across the ceiling in frightful dread, as a sound welled up from the floor like the waking dead. Frozen with fear I watched as a monstrous being slowly rose up through the floor, making the horrible sound I heard! Silently I prayed for deliverance from this terrifying being. In my dream I was joined by others who prayed with me for deliverance from the fearful menace. Suddenly, in a flash of light the dreadful incarnation vanished, replaced by a shining Angelic watcher. The angel spoke to me saying, “One thing you have yet to overcome. You must overcome fear.” At this point I woke in a cold sweat to consider the dream in depth. Continue reading “Overcoming Fear”
I am sure you all enjoy being around people who just seem to radiate positive loving energy out to everyone around them. When they walk into the room, it’s like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. Just being around them makes you feel better and more productive. Whereas the grumpy, gloomy bossy people just drain you of your energy and make you miserable! We are all capable of being that radiant person, who lights up the room, or the grumpy Gus, always complaining and drawing everybody down. One of the things we all long for more than anything else is to simply be happy. If this is something we all seek, why is it so hard to attain? How might we reach this seemingly unattainable goal? We buy new things, and try different things, we move from one place to another and we hop from one relationship to another; or from one job to another. Nothing is truly satisfying, as we are still unhappy. Why can we never find that perfect person, place or thing to make us happy?
In considering the answers to these questions, let us contemplate some very ancient wisdom, that may help us find the answers we are seeking today. Continue reading “Balanced Living ~ Healthy Habits for a Happier You!”
Within each of us is an inner garden. We create this garden, this kingdom of heaven or Pure land within our being by the thoughts we focus on, the actions we choose to do, and the things we dwell on a regular basis. Anything you take into yourself becomes a part of this garden. In our relationships with others we also create a shared garden with them. Continue reading “How to Create your Inner Garden”
I am reading the most wonderful book right now, “Living Buddha Living Christ” by one of my favorite authors, Thich Nhat Hanh. In this beautifully written book Thich Nhat Hanh eloquently compares and presents the teachings of both Buddha and Jesus Christ in very practical ways. He suggests using the concept of mindfulness to help us better understand each other. Buddhist concepts like mindfulness can be used within your own faith to help you grow in your understanding and tolerance of others who see things differently than yourself.
